In 2004 I was invited by my local Community Centre to run workshops along the theme of my \u2018back-to-basics\u2019 writings. To my surprise the workshops quickly became very popular.\u00a0 I initially began with only three or four basic workshops but over the years as demand has dictated I have extended the range of workshops to offer sixteen different topics.\u00a0 I now spend the majority of my time running workshops at various suburban Adelaide and country venues \u2013 for councils, community centres, community groups, businesses and groups\/associations. <\/em><\/p>\n

The workshops offer practical experience in all the areas covered by The Self-Sufficiency Shoppe.\u00a0 Absorbing information and learning new ways are the first stage to changing our behaviour. The next important step is \u2018doing\u2019 \u2013 that is, putting into practise, making, creating and experimenting. The \u2018Living in Harmony with the Planet\u2019 Workshops offer just that in a fun, exciting and fulfilling way. <\/em> The workshop formats are aimed at showing people how easy it is the do things differently in the home and make simple, safe alternatives – using easy-to-find ingredients from the home, garden or supermarket. \u00a0Attending a workshop is a \u2018must\u2019 if you are serious about making significant changes to your lifestyle (i.e. using less chemicals, helping the environment and saving money). It\u2019s \u2018practical experience\u2019 that puts it all into perspective.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/em>Running these workshops has been, by far the most rewarding part of The Self-Sufficiency Shoppe.\u00a0 People really enjoy making and creating using simple, accessible ingredients and taking home lots of product samples! \u00a0For reasons I do not fully understand this type of workshop environment has a wonderful \u2018energy\u2019 of sharing, creativity, freedom and learning. <\/em> It\u2019s a been most wonderful experience watching people create unique products using scents, ingredients, colour, etc. of their particular choosing. It enables people to step out of the confines of commercialism into a world of freedom of choice \u2013 cheaply and easily \u2013 quite the opposite to our money orientated commercial world!\"030\"<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

The most popular workshop is \u2018Natural Skin Care\u2019 \u2013 which is perhaps a reflection of the powerful influence the cosmetic industry has over people\u2019s purchasing choices. The second most popular workshop is \u2018Green Cleaning\u2019.\u00a0 It\u2019s easier to change to using simple alternatives in areas like household cleaning than the more personal areas – such as\u00a0deodorants, hair care, etc.\u00a0\u00a0 So if you plan to do a workshop or two start with \u2018Green Cleaning\u2019 then progress to \u2018Making Your Own Body Products’ later.<\/em><\/p>\n

The focus of all the workshops is \u2018making and creating\u2019 \u2013 not lecturing\u00a0 –\u00a0about\u00a0\u2018doing\u2019 \u2013 not theorising.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The best way to \u2018connect\u2019 with the philosophy of The Shoppe and the ‘Living in Harmony with the Planet\u2019 workshops is by attending a workshop. It\u2019s the practical skills that are the \u2018icing on the cake\u2019 \u2013 so to speak. <\/em><\/p>\n
