Taking from the Earth or disturbing the Earth\u2019s \u2018balance\u2019 should be considered a great \u2018privilege\u2019 and a responsibility of incurred human debt to the planet. Everything, absolutely everything that is taken must be replaced \u2013 to maintain crucial ecological balance.\u00a0 Re-using and recycling (as opposed to buying new) is one small step, on an individual level, toward undoing what has been done to the planet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Our \u2018throw-away\u2019 society with its frivolous attitude toward the planet\u2019s resources is no longer \u2018in harmony with the planet\u2019 but, instead, against it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">As the highest realm of life upon Earth it is our prime responsibility as \u2018planet care-takers\u2019 to watch over and consider all other realms: environment, plant and animal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>We must, therefore, change our lifestyle so that is is more in harmony with the planet and no longer detrimental to the future of the Earth and it&#8217;s living beings.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Why Recycle?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Saves money<\/strong> to recycle (instead of purchasing more of the same)<br \/>\n2.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Good for the planet<\/strong> \u2013 reusing means less consumer products and less impact on the environment<br \/>\n3.\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0<strong>Re-using and recycling<\/strong> taps into our all-important resourcefulness and creativity<\/p>\n<h3>Some Recycling Options<\/h3>\n<p><em>There are many, many ways to reuse recycled items \u2013 it just takes a bit of lateral thinking.\u00a0 Here are some ideas:<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>Tin Cans:<a href=\"http:\/\/theshoppe.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/recycling-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"131\" height=\"255\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-621\" title=\"recycling-2\" src=\"http:\/\/theshoppe.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/recycling-2.jpg\" alt=\"recycling-2\" \/><\/a><\/h3>\n<p>&#8211;\u00a0 Punch holes in the base and use as <strong>seedling or plant holders<\/strong>.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0 Use as <strong>storage containers<\/strong> \u2013 particularly suited to tins with sealable lids.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Different shaped cans make <strong>pastry cutters<\/strong> for scones, biscuits, etc.<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0Follow Grandma\u2019s lead and <strong>store soap scraps<\/strong> in a tin can. Punch holes in the base and hang under the tap. Running water will create froth and bubbles in the wash-bowl,\u00a0bath or sink!\u00a0 For extra froth and bubble add water softener (bi-carbonate of soda or washing soda).<br \/>\n&#8211;\u00a0 Create a <strong>Tin Can Fruit Picker<\/strong> &#8211; Attach with wire, packaging tape or similar a large tin can to a long pole (old broom handle will do) as illustrated. It helps to sharpen the top edge of the can by removing the curled edge with tin snips \u2013 this enables the fruit stem to be severed from the tree more easily. As hard as I try over the years the r<a href=\"http:\/\/theshoppe.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Pam-24.jpg\"><\/a>esidue of \u2018rubbish\u2019 from my household seems to have increased \u2013 not decreased!\u00a0 It doesn\u2019t take long for the bin to fill and the goal of \u2018recycling everything\u2019 becomes impossible.\u00a0 In South Australia a 10c deposit on plastic containers ensures a few dollars in the purse every couple of months at the recycling depot!\u00a0 I re-use tin cans as utensil holders, seedling pots, food storage, etc. I recently turned a range of large matching tin cans into a kitchen canister set \u2013 painted in appropriate decor colour! I use small cups and yoghurt tubs for seedling propagation, moulds for soap and candles.\u00a0 Newspaper, of course, in our dry climate makes ideal garden mulch for saving water \u2013 either in wads or shredded. Other paper (in small quantities) goes in my compost bin.\u00a0 Under advice from the local hardware store salesman a couple of years ago I filled the larger internal cracks in my house with tightly crumpled newspaper then covered it with the appropriate crack filler!\u00a0 It\u2019s worked very well and saved me heaps on crack filler!\u00a0 Of course all kitchen scraps make precious compost for the garden. I re-use plastic bags as bin liners, cat-tray liners, storage bags, carry bags.\u00a0 The list of ways to \u2018re-use, recycle and save\u2019 is probably endless!<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It never ceases to amaze and excite me what I find in second-hand stores or at weekend markets.\u00a0 I never buy new kitchen-ware \u2013 old saucepans, for example, are usually of a better quality than new. Often I can pick up replacement pieces for a dinner-set for just 50c or a dollar.\u00a0 A wonderful thing about second-hand furniture is that a bit of man-handling and an extra scratch or two will not frazzle you as much as the brand new stuff!! It allows for creativity \u2013 with a coat of paint, bit of decoration, new cover, etc. It looks unique and your very own creation!\u00a0 Most of my clothing comes second-hand \u2013 I can purchase up to 8 or ten pieces second-hand with the price I pay for a one new. I use my sewing machine to redesign or adapt clothing to a new look or new use.
